THIS DAY IN REGION FOOTBALL HISTORY: 9/25

THIS DAY IN REGION FOOTBALL HISTORY - 9/25

1936 – Behind the blocking of the great Eddie Herbert, Tom Harmon and the Horace Mann Horsemen, claw their way past the Hammond High Wildcats 6-0. The Horsemen, and their future Heisman Trophy winner Harmon, finish the season at 8-1. Some still wonder how anyone beat them.

1936 – EC Roosevelt loses to Whiting 20-7. It’s the second off nine straight losses in what was a 1-9 season for the Roughriders. The next season Pete Rusinski was brought in as the head coach – and the program would never again lose nine games in a season.

1970 – As part of a 24 game winning streak, the Valpo Vikings do just enough to keep the streak going, with a 17-7 win over the Chesterton Trojans.

1981 – The Valparaiso Vikings win their second of five straight wins on the season, a 30-0 shutout of Chesterton. The win would be one of seven for the Vikings – the most under Coach Mark Hoffman to this point.

1992 – The defending state champion Hobart Brickies improved to 5-0 with a 10-0 shutout win over Chesterton at Brickie Bowl.

1992 – The Valparaiso Vikings came to Demarree Stadium intent on handing the Pirates their first loss of the season, however, the Pirates offense proved to be too much for the Vikings defense and Merrillville came away with a two touchdown victory, 35-21.

1998 – Mike Hepp and his Lake Station Eagles got the better of the Clark Pioneers 27-13 at the Snake Pit in Lake Station. With Hepp’s help, the Eagles would soar to an 8-5 record and a sectional championship. 1998 was the first winning season since ’91 for the Eagles – and it was also the last one.

2009 – In a sloppy, low scoring contest, Griffith and Russ Radtke squeeze by Leroy Marsh and his Munster Mustangs 7-6 at the Boneyard. The two legends would face off just two more times after this one.

2009 – Roy Richards travels cross town with his Morton Governors to Hammond High’s Bernie Krueger Field, where they down their city rival 35-14. It’s one of 11 wins on the season, a record at Hessville High that would stand for an entire year. The Govs won 12 in 2010 and 11 again in 2012. What a run that was!
