THIS DAY IN REGION FOOTBALL HISTORY - 9/27

1963 – Terry Sheehan gets his first win as head coach of the Lowell Red Devils, a 13-7 victory over Merrillville. The victory would help Lowell to a 5-4-1 mark in ’63 – just their second winning season in the last 15 years.

1974 – Mike Jennings and his Lew Wallace Hornets had their way with the Emerson Golden Tornadoes 49-8 at the Hornet’s House in Glen Park.

1985 – Les Thorton and the Griffith Panthers whitewash the Calumet Warriors by a score of 61-0. It’s the most points ever scored by a Griffith team in a single game and it’s also the largest margin of victory until Russs Radtke became the coach.

1991 – The Hobart Brickies improved to 5-0 with a 37-7 victory at Chesterton. This was one of 13 wins for Don Howell’s team, which would go on to win its third of four state championships.

2002 – The Munster Mustangs put a 69-13 hurting on the Wildcats of Hammond High to move their record to 4-2. The 69 points ties a record for most in a game by the Stangs, who hit 69 two weeks in a row back in 1996 – which was also the last time they won a sectional.

2002 – Charlie Boston records his final win as head coach of the Brickies – a 34-9 victory at beautiful Ames Field in Michigan City.

2013 – Keith Kilmer’s Lowell Red Devils escape Hobart with a 21-20 win over Ryan Turley and his Brickies.
