1882 – Richard Higham becomes the only umpire to be banished from baseball after it is discovered he was part of fixing games.

1922 – The American Professional Football Association is renamed the National Football League.

1922 – The Chicago Staleys change their name to the Chicago Bears.

1936 – Joe DiMaggio is the fifth player in MLB history to hit two home runs in one inning.

1947 – Jackie Robinson steals home for the first of 19 times in his career.

1980 – The Atlanta Flames hockey team moves to Calgary.

1983 – Don Sutton becomes the eighth pitcher in MLB history to strikeout 3,000 hitters in his career.

1992 – MLB Commissioner Fay Vincent bans Steve Howe from baseball due to substance abuse issues. Howe would be reinstated in 1993.

1992 – The Orlando Magic draft LSU center Shaquille O’Neal with the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

1995 – The New Jersey Devils complete a sweep of the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.
