1931 – The White Sox and Giants play in the first exhibition night game.

1941 – Portage High School basketball player Joe Sam sets the Northwest Indiana (Lake & Porter Counties) single game boys basketball scoring record by putting up 57 in a game against Washington Twp. The 57 point outing was matched by Michael Coleman of Roosevelt in 1971.

1948 – NASCAR is incorporated.

1953 – Niagara beats Siena 88-81 in six overtimes – the longest game in the history of college basketball.

1960 – Philadelphia Warriors rookie Wilt Chamberlain sets an NBA record with his fourth 50 point game of the season.

1969 – Ted Williams signs a five year contract to become manager of the Washington Senators.

1970 – Blackhawks forward Bobby Hull scores career goal #500.

1976 – New York Knicks coach Red Holzman becomes the second coach in NBA history to win 500 career games.

1979 – In a girls high school basketball game in Iowa, two teams went scoreless for four quarters before there was a 4-2 final in four overtimes.
