1754 – The first international boxing match is held as Jack Slack of Great Britain squared off against Jean Petit from France.

1921 – In a celebration for Cleveland’s 125th anniversary, Cy Young, then 54 years old, pitches 2 innings. 

1960 – The first game of the American Football League takes place as the Patriots defeated the Bills 28-7.

1961 – The Phillies lose the first of 23 consecutive games.

1974 – St. Louis Cardinals legend, Lou Brock, swipes his 700th base. 

1986 – The United State Football League wins its lawsuit against the NFL, with a jury determining that the NFL violated antitrust laws. The USFL is awarded a grand total of $1.

1989 – The White Sox trade Harold Baines to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Scott Fletcher and Sammy Sosa.

1989 – The Philadelphia Phillies retire Steve Carlton’s #32.

1990 – The Red Sox set an MLB record with 12 doubles in a game.

1995 – The Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars face each other in the first exhibition game for each franchise. The Panthers won 20-14.

2003 – Bill Mueller of the Boston Red Sox becomes the first player in MLB history to hit a grand slam from each side of the plate in the same game.

2018 – Chipper Jones, Alan Trammell, Trevor Hoffman, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., Jim Thome, and Jack Morris highlight the Baseball Hall of Fame inductee class.
