1961 – Don Elser’s Horseman of Horace Mann narrowly escaped the Lew Wallace Hornets, coached by former Elser assistant Eddie Herbert, 7-6 at Gilroy Stadium in the Glen Park section of Gary. Elser’s club finished 8-1, while Herbert’s Hornets were hot on their heels, posting a mark of 7-2.
1972 – With a full moon overhead, the Hobart Brickies scratch out a 7-6 win over Andrean at Brickie Bowl. Hobart finished 9-1 that season, the best record to that point under Don Howell and the best year for the program since the Russ Deal regime back in the late 1950s.
1977 – Les Klein and his Portage Indians travel down Route 20 to Michigan City for a Thursday night throwdown with the Rogers High Raiders. The Indians came out victorious with a 17-0 shutout, improving to 4-0 on the season. Nine weeks later, Klein and company would win the Class 3A state title.
1978 – Tommie Franks, arguably the greatest of all the great Hammond High players, tears up the Governor defense on Friday night along Sohl Street, as the Wildcats run all over Morton 37-7. Coached by George Hall, the Cats won their first 11 games before falling in the regional.
1978 – One week after losing to Highland, Bishop Noll took down Hammond Tech 28-0. It’s the first of four straight losses for the Tigers and the third of eight wins for the Warriors.
1995 – Tickets were at premium as fans overtook LaPorte’s Kiwanis Field to witness a week four showdown between the Slicers and the Brickies. In the end, it’s the Slicers who make history by edging past NWI’s most successful football program with a one point 21-20 win. It’s the second time in the past three seasons the orange and black has gotten the better of the purple and gold – after 17 straight defeats.
2006 – Eric Miller’s Highland Trojans pick up their second win of the season with a 25-0 shutout over Hammond High at the Zipper on 41st Street.
2006 – Chip Pettit and his Bulldogs down the Portage Indians 17-10, then coached by the current leader of Bulldog football Craig Buzea, 17-10 on the campus of Crown Point High School.
