1966 – Eddie Herbert’s Hornets of Gary Lew Wallace opened the 1966 season with a dominating 49-0 shutout win at home over Valpo. It was the first of 10 straight wins for Wallace, who went undefeated with a 10-0 record that season. All told, Wallace would win 19 straight across three seasons. The quarterback for the Hornets that night and that season was Dave Shelbourne, who went on to Northwestern, before becoming head coach of the Highland Football Trojans, a program he led for 14 years (1975-1988). His 1987 Trojan team made it to the Class 5A state finals.
1977 – Les Klein’s Portage Indians open Duneland Conference action with a 20-7 victory over rival Valpo. The Indians were ultimately crowned state champions, finishing the season at 12-1 and defeating Evansville Reitz in the Class 3A championship game.
1977 – A pair of Nick’s square off in the Battle of 119th Street. In the end, it’s Nick Voris and the Clark Pioneers who defeat Nick Crnkovich and the Whiting Oilers 28-0.
1994 – Bo Radtke and the Griffith Panthers defeat the Munster Mustangs 14-10 in a close one at the Boneyard. Griffith finished 11-2 that season, eventually falling in the semistate to Tipton. Check back in November for more on that one.
1994 – Kirk Kennedy’s Lowell team runs ragged over Morton at the Inferno, coming away with a 41-0 victory. The Devils would lose only twice in ’94 – but it was their win over Hobart in the Regional that everyone remembers.
2005 – Jeff Cain’s Whiting Oilers improve to 4-0 with a 54-0 smackdown of the Lake Station Edison Eagles. The squad from Oil City wins 11 straight to start the year before falling in the sectional final. This was the second consecutive 11-1 campaign for Cain and company.
