1971 – Third year program Gary West closes out the season at 8-1, their best single season mark in history, with a 13-2 win over Andrean at the West Side Football Grounds.

1971 – In front of packed house on the campus of Hessville High, the Morton Governors win the city championship and improve to 9-0 with an 8-0 win over cross city rival Hammond High.

1976 – The Merrillville Pirates avenge a regular season loss and defeat the defending 3A state champion Valparaiso Vikings 35-14 @ Viking Field to win the program’s first ever sectional title. With the win, the Pirates improved to 10-1 on the season. Two weeks later they would win their first and only state football championship.

1993 – Russ Radtke’s first season as Griffith head comes to an end with a 20-12 loss at Twin Lakes. The Panthers finish the campaign with a disappointing 6-5 record.

1999 – Led by #6 Mike French, Kirk Kennedy’s Lowell Red Devils win their third sectional title with a 17-14 defeat of Tyler Radtke and the Griffith Panthers at the Inferno on Commercial Ave.

2004 – In the fifth of five epic battles, Andrean comes from behind to win the sectional 17 championship 36-35 over Griffith @ the Boneyard. The game was decided on 4th down and 26 from the Panther 33 yard line with just over two minutes remaining. That’s when 59er QB Tommy Finn was chased from the pocket. The rest is history.

2004 – Lowell hammers a tough Highland Trojan team 48-7 in Highland. It is the second consecutive sectional championship for Lowell and the fifth overall.

2004 – Merrillville outlasts Portage in an overtime thriller 44-38 at the Warpath. It’s the first sectional title under Jeff Yelton – and the first for the school since 1992.

2010 – Morton wins its third straight sectional title, this time over the Gary West Side Cougars, a program that was then on the rise. The appearance by West Side was the just the second for a Gary public school in a sectional football finals event.

2010 – The Valpo Vikings win their eight sectional championship with a 16-6 win over the Crown Point Bulldogs at Viking Field.
