1950 – The White Sox release Luke Appling, who had been a member of the team since 1930. Appling was a seven time All-Star and was voted into the Hall of Fame.

1953 – The US Supreme Court rules that Major League Baseball is exempt from antitrust laws.

1961 – The PGA eliminates its Caucasians only rule.

1962 – Hammond High football wins the AP State Championship for the second time in three seasons after defeating SB Riley 20-7.

1976 – The Oakland A’s release Billy Williams, ending his MLB career. Williams played for the Cubs from 1959-1974 and hit 426 career homers. He would eventually be elected to the Hall of Fame.

1979 – The Hobart Brickies, playing in their first ever sectional championship game, surprised football fans around the state by upsetting the undefeated and #2 ranked Penn Kingsmen 27-21 in front of more than 8,000 fans at historic Brickie Bowl. Penn, a powerhouse program that featured six future Division One players at the time, was a heavy favorite against the underdog Brickies. The following week Hobart in the first of it’s 11 state championship games under legendary head coach Don Howell.

1990 – River Forest football wins their only regional title (to date), beating FW Luers 15-12.

1996 – Evander Holyfield upsets Mike Tyson by knockout in the 11th round to become just the second boxer ever, after Muhammad Ali, to win the world heavyweight title three times.
