1957 – Milwaukee first baseman Frank Torre ties an MLB record by scoring six runs in a game as part of a 23-10 win over the Cubs.
1962 – Stan Musial picks up career hit #3,516 passing Tris Speaker for second place on the all-time list, trailing only Ty Cobb.
1965 – Mr. Cub Ernie Banks hits career home run #400 as part of Chicago’s 5-3 win over St. Louis. Banks hit the homer off Cardinals pitcher Curt Simmons, who also gave up Willie May’s 400th homer back in 1963.
1966 – In the first ever game for the Miami Dolphins, Joe Auer returns the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Miami would go on to lose to the Raiders 23-14.
1971 – Sixteen year old tennis player Chris Evert wins her first of what would be a record 101 US Open matches.
1972 – Cubs pitcher Milt Pappas throws a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres. Pappas was on strike away from a perfect game, on a 2-2 count, his next two pitches, which were close to the zone, were called balls.
1972 – For the first time since the start of the modern Olympics in 1896, a non-American wins the pole vault as East Germany’s Wolfgang Nordwig takes the gold.
1978 – Reggie Jackson becomes the 19th player in MLB history to hit 20 plus homers in 11 straight seasons.
