1922 – In the first official college conference basketball tournament, North Carolina beats Monroe 40-26 to win the Southern Intercollegiate Conference title.

1929 – The Blackhawks are shut out for an NHL record eighth straight game.

1940 – College basketball is televised for the first time as W2XBS broadcasts a hoops double-header from Madison Square Garden.

1981 – Calvin Murphy of the Houston Rockets makes the last of his 78 consecutive successful free throws, setting an NBA record.

1993 – Winnipeg’s Teemu Selanne becomes the third rookie in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season.

1998 – Mark Messier, then with the Vancouver Canucks, becomes the fourth player in NHL history to score 1,600 career points.

1999 – Venus and Serena Williams become the first sisters to win WTA Tour events on the same day. Venus won the IGA SuperThrift Tennis Classic in San Antonio while Serena won the Gaz de France Open.

2010 – Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal gives Canada a 3-2 win over the US in the gold medal men’s hockey game at the Vancouver Olympics.
