1935 — Babe Ruth is released by the New York Yankees and signed by the Boston Braves, he would retire later that year ending his 22-year big league career with 714 home runs.

1967 — Mario Andretti becomes the only person born outside the United States to win the Daytona 500

1968 – 32 African nations boycott the Olympics due to the presence of South Africa.

1981 – The Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars play in a game that featured a record 84 penalties, totaling 392 minutes, and 12 ejections. 

1987 — Michael Jordan scores 58 points, and sets a Bulls record by scoring 58 points in a game. He went 26-27 from the free-throw line.

1989 – Mario Lemieux becomes the third player in NHL history to tally 100 assists in a season.

1989 – Dallas Cowboys fire Coach Tom Landry after a 29-year career, his total wins amassed to 250 to only 160 losses winning 2 Super Bowls, 5 NFC Titles, and 13 Division titles.

1991 – Former White Sox owner Bill Veeck is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

2007 – Roger Federer breaks Jimmy Connors’ 30-year-old record with his 161st week atop the ATP rankings.

 2018 — The UCONN women’s basketball team finishes the regular season undefeated for the 10^th time.
