1861 – The Philadelphia Athletics beat Charter Oak 36-27 in a baseball game played on frozen Litchfield Pond in Brooklyn, New York. All of the players wore ice skates.
1924 – The first Winter Olympics come to a close in Chamonix, France.
1932 – The Winter Olympics begin in Lake Placid, NY. It is the first time the Winter games were held in the U.S.
1969 – The Oakland Raiders hire John Madden as the team’s head coach.
1987 – The Sacramento Kings have the worst first quarter since the inception of the shot clock in 1954. In what would end up being a 128-92 loss to the Lakers, Sacramento scored all of four points in the opening quarter.
1991 – The Baseball Hall of Fame’s board of directors votes 12-0 to bar players on the permanently banned from baseball list from being considered for the Hall.
1997 – Mario Lemieux scores career goal #600. He’s the first player in NHL history to score 600 goals while playing for just one team.
2003 – Jaromir Jagr scores his 500th career goal while also netting his 11th career hat trick.
2007 – Despite Devin Hester returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, the Indianapolis Colts beat the Bears 29-17 to win Super Bowl XLI. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is named MVP after throwing for 247 yards and a touchdown.
2017 – San Antonio Spurs coach, and Merrillville High School grad, Gregg Popovich becomes the winningest coach with a single NBA franchise after picking up his 1,128th career win with the Spurs.
2018 – Led by backup quarterback Nick Foles, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 to win Super Bowl LII.
