THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 1/31

1920 – Quebec Bulldogs center Joe Malone sets an NHL record with seven goals in a win over the Toronto St. Patricks.

1927 – National League President John Heydler rules that baseball star Rogers Hornsby can’t own stock in the St. Louis Cardinals while playing for the New York Giants.

1988 – The Washington Redskins rout the Denver Broncos 42-10 to win Super Bowl XXII. Washington quarterback Doug Williams is awarded the MVP.

1993 – The Dallas Cowboys win Super Bowl XXVII in impressive fashion, beating the Buffalo Bills 52-17. Cowboy QB Troy Aikman is named MVP.

1997 – Dominique Wilkins, then playing for the San Antonio Spurs, becomes the sixth player in NBA history to score 26,000 career points.

1999 – The Denver Broncos win their second straight Super Bowl, beating the Atlanta Falcons 34-19. Denver quarterback John Elway is named MVP in what would be his final career game. 

2015 –  New Zealand’s 17-year-old Lydia Ko becomes the youngest golfer in men’s or women’s golf history to be ranked No. 1 in the world.
