THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 1/9

1811 – The first recorded Woman’s Golf Tournament takes place in Musselburgh, East Lothian Scotland. 

1903 – Frank Farrell and Bill Devery Puchase the American League’s Baltimore baseball franchise for $18,000 and move to New York City. Later become the Yankees.

1942 – In his 20^th defence of his title, Joe Louis KOs Buddy Baer in the first round of their match to retain the Heavyweight Boxing Title at new York’s Madison Square Garden.

1947 – Playing for the Providence Steamrollers and averaging just 12.2 ppg Dino Martin becomes the first player in NBA history to score 40 points in a single game during a 91-68 win over Cleveland Rebels.

1955 – Bevo Francis scores 116 points in a college game. The six foot nine inch Francis became one of the most prolific scorers in college basketball. Topping the 100 point mark twice, Francis remains the only NAIA player to score 100 points in a game.

1958 – University of Cincinnati’s Oscar Robertson scores 56 points vs Seton Hall who scores 54 points as a team.

1962 – The NFL prohibits grabbing of face mask. In 1956 the NFL ruled it illegal for one player to grab another by his face mask, except if that player was carrying the ball. In 1962 that ruled changes to include all players.

1977 – Super Bowl XI the Oakland Raiders defeat the Minnesota Vikings 32-14 in Pasadena California at the Rose Bowl. Fred Biletnikoff, Oakland Wide Receiver wins the MVP.

1979 – The Boston Bruins retire #4 Bobby Orr Jersey. Playing for 12 seasons, 10 with the Bruins, he is recognized as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Orr won a record eight straight Norris Trophies as the best defenseman.

1985 – The NHL Calgary Flames set a record with 264 regular season games without being shut out.

1989 – Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski were elected into The Baseball Hall of Fame.

1991 – Baseball officially bans Pete Rose from being elected to the Hall of Fame for betting on baseball.

2000 – Miami Dolphin Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino wins his last career game. 20-17 over Seattle.

2017 – College Football National Championship at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. #2 Clemson downs #1 Alabama 35-31.
