1932 – John McGraw retires as manager of the New York Giants after 30 years on the job. He led the team to 2,583 wins.

1954 – Golfer Babe Didrikson Zaharias wins her third US Open a month after having surgery due to colon cancer.
1966 – Atlanta pitcher Tony Cloninger becomes the first player in National League history to hit two grand slams in one game.
1974 – Dodgers pitcher Mike Marshall sets an MLB record by coming in to pitch for the 13th consecutive game.
1982 – Martina Navratilova wins her first of six straight Wimbledon titles, defeating Chris Evert in the finals.
1988 – Gene Nelson of the Oakland A’s becomes the first pitcher to steal a base since 1973, doing so in a 9-8 win over Toronto.
2004 – Maria Sharapova defeats Serena Williams to win Wimbledon. It is the first time since 1999 that none of the four major titles are held by either Serena or Venus Williams.
2006 – Detroit Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman retires from the NHL, finishing his career with 692 career goals and 1,755 points.
