1934 – Detroit radio executive George Richards buys the NFL’s Portsmouth Spartans for $8,000, moves the team to Detroit and renames them the Lions.
1962 – Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax throws his first of four career no-hitters, shutting down the Mets.
1965 – The NFL grants a franchise to Atlanta. Rankin Smith, Jr. an insurance executive, buys the team for a then record $8.5 million.
1978 – Giants slugger Willie McCovey hits his 500th career home run.
1988 – The City of Chicago agrees to build a new stadium for the White Sox so that they won’t move to Florida.
1993 – The Orlando Magic draft Chris Webber from the University of Michigan with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft. They then trade him to Golden State in exchange for Penny Hardaway and three future first round picks.
1994 – The US Figure Skating Association strips Tonya Harding of the 1994 national championship and bans her from the organization for life following the attack she helped orchestrate on rival Nancy Kerrigan.
1995 – Eddie Murray, then with the Cleveland Indians, becomes the 20th player in MLB history to record 3,000 career hits.
1999 – The Bulls draft Duke center Elton Brand with the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.
