1927 – The US beats Great Britan 9 ½ to 2 ½ to win the first ever Ryder Cup.

1964 – Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax throws his third career no-hitter, beating the Phillies.

1974 – The NFL grants an expansion franchise to the city of Seattle.

1974 – Hank Aaron sets a National League record by hitting his 16th career grand slam.

1980 – Gordie Howe announces his retirement from hockey.

1984 – For the first time since 1952, Arnold Palmer failed to make the cut at the US Open.

1987 – Danny Harris defeats Edwin Moses in the 400 hurdles at a meet in Madrid, Spain. Harris’ win ends Moses’ 122 race winning streak, which dated back to August 26, 1977.

1988 – Steffi Graf wins her second straight French Open title.

1990 – Penn State is officially voted into the Big Ten, giving the conference 11 teams. The Nittany Lions are the first team to be added to the Big Ten since Michigan State in 1949.

2008 – The Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup by beating the Penguins in six games.

2009 – Randy Johnson, then with the Giants, becomes the 24th pitcher in MLB history to win 300 career games.
