1917 – In a pitching battle between two all-time greats, Babe Ruth and the Boston Red Sox defeat Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators 1-0. Ruth allowed just two hits and drove in the winning run on a sac fly.

1925 – Pittsburgh shortstop Glenn Wright records an unassisted triple play. After catching a line drive off the bat of St. Louis’ Jim Bottomley, Wright stepped on second to double off Jimmy Cooney and then tagged Rogers Hornsby who was running from first.

1960 – Larry and Norm Sherry of the Los Angeles Dodgers are the 10th brother pitcher-catcher battery in baseball history.

1972 – The Lakers win their first championship since moving to LA, defeating the Knicks in game five of the NBA Finals.

1982 – A California federal jury rules that the NFL violated antitrust laws in preventing the Oakland Raiders move to Los Angeles.

1989 – Michael Jordan hits his famous shot over Cleveland’s Craig Ehlo to give the Bulls a 101-100 in the deciding game five of their opening round series.

1993 – Wayne Gretzky scores career playoff goals #100 and #101 in a 7-4 Kings win over Vancouver.

1994 – An eight seed beats a one seed for the first time in NBA playoff history as the Nuggets pull off a series upset over the Seattle Supersonics.

1995 – Reggie Miller scores eight points in the final 16 seconds of the game to lead the Pacers to a 107-105 comeback win over the Knicks.

2009 – Yankees closer Mariano Rivera gives up back to back homers for the first time in his career, with Tampa Bay’s Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria hitting consecutive home runs against him.
