1929 – The New York Yankees become the first team in MLB history to have numbers on their uniforms.
1940 – Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians throws the first, and to date only, opening day no-hitter, shutting down the White Sox.
1949 – The Toronto Maple Leafs become the first team in NHL history to win three straight Stanley Cup championships.
1961 – The Blackhawks cap off a six game series by beating the Red Wings 5-1 to win the Stanley Cup.
1972 – Burt Hooten of the Cubs throws a no-hitter against the Phillies.
1980 – Tennis legend Arthur Ashe announces his retirement.
1985 – Mickey Mantle is reinstated by Major League Baseball after a two year ban for working as a casino as a greeter and autograph signer.
1987 – Michael Jordan becomes just the second player in NBA history to record 3,000 points in one season.
1999 – Wayne Gretzky announces that he will retire from the NHL following the end of the season.
2008 – Jason Kidd records the 100th triple-double of his career by putting up 27 points to go along with 10 assists and 10 rebounds in a Mavericks win over the Pelicans.
2019 – Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson becomes the highest paid player in NFL history, signing a four year $140 million extension, including a $65 million signing bonus.
