1968 – The US men’s basketball team beats Yugoslavia 65-50 to win the gold medal at the Mexico City Olympics.

1973 – The Cubs trade Fergie Jenkins to the Rangers for Bill Madlock and Vic Harris.

1973 – The Giants trade slugger Willie McCovey to the Padres.

1990 – Evander Holyfield knocks out Buster Douglas in a bout in Las Vegas to win the undisputed world heavyweight championship.

1998 – Jerry Rice sets the NFL record for catches in consecutive games as he hauls in a reception for the 184th straight game. 

1998 – Broncos kicker Jason Elam ties the record for longest field goal, hitting a 63 yarder.

2003 – Florida State coach Bobby Bowden collects career win #339, giving him the most in major college football history.

2005 – The White Sox and Astros play in the longest World Series game ever time wise and tie for longest in innings as the White Sox’s 7-5 winner takes 14 innings and 5 hours and 41 minutes.
