FOOTBALL: RSN Top 10 – Week #6

It’s a good news/bad news situation for the Wolves entering the sixth week of the season. The good news? The gauntlet against the top three ranked teams in the RSN Top 10 (Chesterton, Valpo & Merrillville) is over. The bad news? The Wolves went winless in that stretch to drop below  the .500 mark. Not many teams can suffer a three game losing streak and stay in the poll, but City gets the benefit of the doubt for now. A loss to LC this week however will drop the Wolves out for sure.

The Bearcats haven’t been ranked in a couple of seasons, but they are deserving of a spot in the poll thanks to a 3-1 start. Wheeler has outscored opponents 130-20 in their three wins, so they aren’t just winning, they are winning big. The Bearcats will be favored in their next two games – then comes the game eight showdown at Hanover Central. Wheeler should have plenty of momentum coming into that battle.

The Warriors got back into the rankings last week and they made a strong case to not only stay, but to move up, with a 52-0 win over EC Central. The shutout gives them three on the season, leaving them one shy of tying the school record. You know the Warriors would love to blank their opponents this week when they travel to Griffith. Calumet hasn’t beaten the Panthers since 1983 and their scheduled meetings in both 2019 and 2020, when Calumet would be favored, were canceled. Expect a large, and fired up, Calumet contingent to invade the Boneyard on Friday.

After back to back losses in weeks two and three, the Bulldogs have responded with a pair of one-sided victories and continue to rise up the rankings. CP hasn’t won three in a row since 2017, and while that may be a tall order this week with the Valparaiso Vikings coming to the Hub, this is a focused and well coached pack of ‘Dogs that won’t just roll over for their opponent. CP is also 0-2 in front of the home crowd, so that’s more motivation to pull off the upset and send the fans home happy.

How dominant were the Wildcats last week in their win over Griffith? They averaged 10 yards per play on offense and held their opponent to just four total first downs – that’s how dominating they were. Hanover has put up at least 34 points in every game this season, making them one of the highest scoring teams in the entire state. They’ll be the heavy favorite again this week when they battle Boone Grove – expect more big numbers on the board.

Another week, another double digit victory, and another win over Lowell for Hobart. Friday’s vanquishing of the Red Devils makes four in a row for the Brickies against their once powerful NCC rival from south Lake County. Hobart can claim first place in the conference by winning this week at 5959 Broadway, where they’ll face Andrean. And with a win all but assures the Bricks of the NCC crown.

Week Five was a bit of an odd one for the Niners, as a 14-0 lead over Highland quickly went away following a lightning delay. An although the Trojans tied it up. Andrean would go on to win 38-14, but it wasn’t the most dominating of performances. The Niners don’t have to travel the next three weeks as Hobart, Munster, and KV all invade the Holy Lands on a crusade to drop Andrean from their spot in the RSN rankings and the NCC standings.

The Trojan defense was more than up to the challenge in last week’s narrow loss to Valpo, holding the Vikings to 10 points – the lowest regular season scoring output for the Vikings since 2017. But the Chesterton offense struggled, mustering a lone touchdown, as the Trojans fell for the first time all year. It was still a solid performance, and a great game, so they don’t drop in the rankings. We’ll see how they respond to their first disappointing result of the season as they head to the Warpath to take on Portage. Our guess is they’ll respond in impressive fashion.

It was a nail-biter but not only did Valpo down Chesterton in their rivalry matchup, but it was the 24th consecutive DAC win for the Vikings who haven’t lost a conference game since September 22, 2017. Their opponent that game was the Crown Point Bulldogs…in Crown Point. Who is Valpo’s opponent this week? Crown Point…in Crown Point. Will we see a twenty fifth straight DAC win or will the ‘Dogs stop the Viking invasion? Find out Friday on the Region Sports Network at Facebook.com/Regionsports and Regionsports.com!

Three times this season, Merrillville has had games that were within two possessions at the half. Week one they actually trailed Andrean 21-20 at the break. Week four they held a 15 point lead over Portage and last week a six point lead over Michigan City. The Pirates went on to win those games by 26, 32 and 26 points respectively, so we can officially say the second half belongs to Merrillville. Merrillville welcomes LaPorte on Friday, with the long awaited showdown against Valpo looming next Friday. It’s homecoming this week for the Pirates, so we know Merrillville will want to put on a show for the DeMarree faithful, and don’t expect them to get caught looking ahead.
