1938 – The Montreal Maroons are dropped from the NHL due to financial struggles.

1947 – Dan Bankhead, the first African-American pitcher in MLB history, homers in his first at bat.

1955 – The first color telecast of a tennis match is broadcasted on NBC. 

1961 – The International Hockey Hall of Fame opens in Toronto.
