1895 – The first auto race in the US is held, going from Chicago to Evanston and back – a span of 55 miles. Frank Duryea wins the race with an average speed of seven miles per hour.

1925 – Goalie Georges Vezina of the Montreal Canadiens collapses in the net during a game against Pittsburgh. He would die of tuberculosis four months later.

1929 – Ernie Nevers of the Chicago Cardinals becomes the first player in NFL history to score all of his team’s points during a game, scoring six touchdowns and kicking four extra points in a 40-6 win over the Bears.

1972 – The Dodgers trade future Hall of Famer Frank Robinson to the Angels.

1981 – University of Alabama coach Bear Bryant picks up career victory #315, setting an NCAA record.

1987 – Hobart wins the first football state championship in program history, beating Jasper 31-0 to cap an undefeated 14-0 season.

1987 – The Highland Trojans fall in the football state championship game, losing to Ben Davis 14-7.
