1925 – Football legend, Red Grange, plays his final collegiate football for the University of Illinois, before signing with the Chicago Bears.

1934 – The Yankees buy Joe DiMaggio’s contract from the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League.

1942 – EC Washington wins a mythical football state title, beating SB Washington 27-6.

1949 – Bill Veeck sells the Cleveland Indians for $22 million in order to pay for his divorce settlement.

1969 – Six years after he last played for the Boston Celtics, Bob Cousy returns to pro basketball, suiting up for the Cincinnati Royals. He would play in a total of seven games, appearing mostly in garbage time.

1981 – BYU’s Jim McMahon throws for 552 passing yards, while his tight end, Gordon Hudson, sets an NCAA record with 259 receiving yards, the most in a game by a tight end. 

1982 – The NFL players resume play after going on strike for seven weeks. 

1997 – The Griffith Panthers win their first, and to date only, football semi-state title, beating FW Dwenger 35-21.
