1895 – The first organized auto race in the United States is held in Chicago as six cars compete on a 52 mile course by the lake front. Only two cars finish due to blizzard like conditions.

1950 – The Roosevelt Panthers cap off an undefeated season with a 27-0 win over Gary Froebel.

1969 – Gordie Howe records his 19th, and final, career hat trick as the Red Wings beat the Penguins 4-3. At 41 years old, Howe becomes the oldest player to get a hat trick.

1974 – The Atlanta Braves trade Hank Aaron to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Dave May.

1978 – The contract for Wayne Gretzky is sold by the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA to the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.

1979 – The Hobart Brickies win their first ever football sectional championship, defeating Munster 35-30.

1984 – The Hobart Brickies football team beats Crown Point to win the sectional championship.

1988 – Oakland A’s shortstop Walt Weiss is named AL Rookie of the Year, making it the third straight season that an A’s player won the award after Jose Canseco won it in ’86 and Mark McGwire in ’87.

1990 – The Suns and Jazz play in a regular season game in Tokyo, Japan. It is the first regular season game by any of the big four professional sports leagues played outside of North America.

1990 – The Griffith Panthers top the Gavit Gladiators 28-6 to win a football sectional championship.

1990 – The Golden State Warriors and the Denver Nuggets combine for 320 total points, setting an NBA record for most points between two squads in a non-overtime game.

1994 – Forgoing all sense of geography, the NFL announces that the Carolina Panthers will play in the NFC West division, while the Jacksonville Jaguars will play in the AFC Central.

1996 – Miami Heat coach Pat Riley becomes the eighth coach in NBA history to win 800 career games.

1997 – San Diego punt returner Eric Metcalf becomes the second player in NFL history to return two punts for touchdowns in one game.
