1942 – Branch Rickey is named President and GM of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
1949 – The White Sox trade for Nellie Fox. Fox would go on to play for the Sox until 1963, making the All-Star team 12 times, winning the MVP in 1959 and would end up being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
1960 – Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, fights in his first professional bout, beating Tunney Hunsaker in by points in six rounds.
1979 – Billy Martin is fired as manager of the Yankees for the second time.
2014 – The San Francisco Giants win their third World Series championship in five years, beating the Royals in seven games.
2018 – Golden State Warriors point guard Klay Thompson sets an NBA record for three-pointers in a game by hitting 14 of them in a win over the Bulls.
