1938 – At old Gleason Field, Gary Froebel shuts out a Gary Wallace 25-0. The Blue Devils did not allow the Hornets quarterback – future pro football hall of fame coach Hank Stram (Kansas City Chiefs), to matriculate the ball downfield.
1949 – On their way to a perfect season, East Chicago Roosevelt whipsWhiting 49-0 and would eventually be voted the state champion – the fourth of six for the school under coach Pete Rucinski.
1954 – Gary Emerson tops Horace Mann 18-7 at Tiny Tolleston Field on Gary’s west side.
1957 – The Golden Tornado of Gary Emerson tie the Gary Horace Mann Horsemen 13-13 at the Gilroy Stadium.
1967 – In a Saturday edition of Friday night lights, Griffith beats second year school Lake Central 20-7.
1977 – Led by sophomore running back Craig Buzea, the Griffith Panthers down Crown Point 20-13 in “The town that came to the tracks.”
1978 – A star-studded Hammond High club, led by quarterback Tommy Franks, beats Hammond Tech, their next door neighbor to the north by a score of 33-12
1981 – Les Thorton’s Griffith Panthers go into the old Burial Grounds on 41 and shutout the Lake Central Indians 27-0 in a playoff game that was part of the old ‘Cluster’ system. The Panthers finished the season 10-1 – the first 10-win season in school history.
1988 – Hammond High advances to the sectional championship game with a 30-0 win over crosstown Morton.
1988 – The Lake Central Indians get by the Merrillville Pirates 15-7 in round two of the 5A sectional.
1994 – Hammond High edges Lew Wallace 7-6 in Dave Templin’s last game as head coach of the Hornets. Templin was 98-68 at Wallace and won the city’s only football sectional championship (1989).
1994 – Lake Central, coached by Elmer Britton, crushes Crown Point in the sectional semi’s 44-3 at old Bulldog Turf in Crowntown.
2005 – The Morton Governors advance to the sectional championship under Roy Richards with a 52-18 beating of Hammond Hammond High.
2011 – Morton outscores East Chicago Central 35-21 in a sectional semi-final showdown at the Governors Mansion on the campus of Hessville High.
2011 – North Newton goes to the Swamp and upsets Jeff Bean’s River Forest Ingots 34-21.
