THIS DAY IN REGION FOOTBALL HISTORY - 10/24
1914 – The Gary high school football team, made up of players from Froebel and Emerson, travel to Chicago where they lose to Hyde Park High 21-0.
1936 – Hammond Catholic (now Bishop Noll) beats Griffith 18-2.
1947 – The Roosevelt Roughriders, who would go on to a 9-0 season, shutout out the Whiting Oilers 13-0.
1947 – The Gary Emerson Golden Tornado shuts out Columbus 32-0 on their way to a 4-0 season. That’s right – 4-0. Due to a student strike, all games against other Gary schools were cancelled.
1958 – Hobart downs EC Roosevelt 20-0. Russ Deal’s Brickies finished the season 8-0-1. Pete Rucinski’s Roughriders had somewhat of a down year for them, at 6-3.
1969 – Gary Emerson beats Horace Mann 32-2 at Gilroy Stadium.
1975 – Highland captures the 10th Battle of the Bridge. The 7-0 win at Barney Hill Field on Columbia Ave. is the first ever for the Trojans in the series.
1975 – Eventual 3A state champ Valpo improves to 9-0 with a 33-6 win over Plymouth.
1979 – Highland shuts out Lowell. The Red Devils go 0-10 for the second consecutive year.
1980 – Gary Emerson, the high school home of the Karras brothers – Lou, Ted Alex, and the Region’s first long term football powerhouse, plays its final game – a 41-6 loss to Roosevelt at Leonard Douglas Stadium.
1986 – Valpo outlasts LaPorte 34-31 in triple overtime. The two schools played just three weeks earlier, with the Slicers win 7-0. In both games the road team was victorious.
1997 – The Griffith Panthers knock the Munster Mustangs out of the tournament with a 21-6 win at the Boneyard.
1997 – Hammond High batters Morton 55-3. The Governors finish 0-10, their second consecutive winless season. Morton’s losing streak would eventually reach 22 games.
2003 – River Forest falls to LaVille 20-7 in a Class 2A sectional opener. Despite the loss, the Ingots finish the season 6-4 – their last winning record until 2011.
2008 – Merrillville crushes Crown Point 42-6 in a Class 5A sectional opener.
2014 – Lowell destroys Griffith 48-7 in a Class 4A sectional one opening round game. The loss leaves the Panthers 1-9 for the season, their worst mark since 1975.
