THIS DAY IN REGION FOOTBALL HISTORY - 10/20
1939 – Just a week after winning for the first time ever at brand new, but yet-to-be named Brickie Bowl, Hobart travels to Valpo where they are shutout by the Vikings 20-0.
1950 – The Brickies blank the Bucs 13-0 at Brickie Bowl. Hobart moved to 6-2 with the victory, while the loss dropped Merrillville to 4-4.
1972 – The East Gary Edison Eagles remain undefeated after pounding the Panthers of Griffith 56-0. First year coach Gil Hamilton guided the Eagles to a 10-0 mark that season, scoring 40 or points in six games that season. The Eagles are the last Region team to finish an entire season with a 10-0 mark. 1972 was the last year without a state tournament.
1972 – In the last year before the state tournament began, the 2-5 Merrillville Pirates shock the 7-0 Hobart Brickies by a score of 25-7. The Pirates finished the season 4-6 and the Brickies finished at 9-1. That’s why the play the games.
1978 – The Calumet Warriors improve to 7-2 with a 12-7 win over the 6-3 Munster Mustangs at Barney Hill Field in Munster.
1989 – Dave Templin’s Lew Wallace Hornets improve to 10-0 after a 28-0 shutout of defending regional champion Crown Point at Bulldog Turf in the opening round of the Class 5A state football tournament.
1989 – State champion to be Bishop Noll began their tournament travels with a week one trip to Kankakee Valley. The Warriors claw through the Kougars 48-14 on their way to the Class 3A state title.
1989 – The Hobart Brickies march to their second state championship kicks off with a 34-0 shutout victory over the Wirt Troopers at Brickie Bowl.
2000 – The Valpo Vikings hang on for 7-3 sectional semi-final victory over Merrillville at Demarree Stadium. The Vikings would win the sectional the following week.
2006 – Hobart knocks Munster out of the tournament by a score of 28-17 in a game played at Brickie Bowl. It is the seventh time the Brickies have ended a Munster season.
2006 – The Griffith Panthers down the Morton Governors 40-21 in the opening round of the Class 4A football sectionals at the Boneyard to improve to 9-1 on the season. Russ Radtke’s Panthers would make it to the regional, where the fell to Norwell 35-7.
