1912 – Boxer Jack Johnson is arrested for violating the Mann Act for “transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes.”

1966 – Bobby Orr makes his regular season debut with the Boston Bruins. 

1967 – The American League allows the Kansas City Athletics to move to Oakland, California and announces expansion teams in Seattle and KC beginning in 1971, later moved up to 1969.

1968 – Bob Beamon of the US sets the world record in the long jump at the Olympics in Mexico City, leaping 29 feet and 2 ½ inches, beating the previous record by more than a foot.

1974 – Chicago Bulls center Nate Thurmond records the first quadruple-double in NBA history, scoring 22 points while adding 14 rebounds, 13 assists and 12 blocks.

1977 – Reggie Jackson hits home runs in three consecutive at bats, all on the first pitch, as the Yankees beat the Dodgers to win the World Series.

1992 – The University of Miami and University of Washington football teams are tied for the top spot in the AP college football rankings. It’s the first tie for #1 in 51 years.

2009 – Tom Brady sets an NFL record by throwing five touchdowns in a single quarter in a game against the Titans.

2016 – Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa scores career goal #500.
