THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 10/13

1903 – The Boston Pilgrims win the first World Series, beating the Pirates in the eighth game to take the championship.

1947 – The first NHL All-Star Game is played in Toronto. 

1960 – Bill Mazeroski hits a home run in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Yankees 10-9 and win the World Series for the Pirates.

1967 – The first American Basketball Association (ABA) game is played. 

1967 – The Seattle Supersonics play their first NBA game, losing to the San Francisco Warriors, 144-116. 

1971 – The first World Series night game is held as the Pirates beat the Orioles 4-3 in a game in Pittsburgh.

1982 – The International Olympic Committee approves the reinstatement of Jim Thorpe’s gold medals.

1985 – Vince Coleman of the St. Louis Cardinals is injured after his leg is caught in the automated tarp at Busch Stadium.

1991 – Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston becomes the first manager in MLB history to be ejected from a playoff game.

1993 – The Anaheim Mighty Ducks play their first NHL game. 

1998 – The NBA cancels regular season games for the first time in league history as labor negotiations break off.

2019 – Simone Biles wins his 25h medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. This makes her the most decorated gymnast in the sport’s history.
