1907 – The Cubs beat the Tigers 2-0 to win the World Series.

1940 – The University of Tennessee football team records their 17th consecutive regular season shutout, beating the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga 53-0.

1968 – The Summer Olympics open in Mexico City. They are the first Olympics games held in a Latin American country.

1979 – Boston Celtics forward Chris Ford makes the first three-pointer in NBA history in the same game that Larry Bird makes his NBA debut.

1979 – Magic Johnson makes his NBA debut against the San Diego Clippers. 

1986 – Walter Payton becomes the first player in NFL history to rack up 20,000 career all-purpose yards.

1989 – The Dallas Cowboys trade running back Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for five players and six future draft picks, including future stars Emmitt Smith, Russell Maryland, and Darren Woodson.

1993 – The Blue Jays beat the White Sox in game six to win the ALCS.

1997 – Jacksonville Jaguars RB James Stewart becomes just the fourth player in NFL history, and first since 1963, to rush for five touchdowns in a game, accomplishing the feat in a 38-21 win over Philadelphia.

2007 – Philadelphia Flyers forward Jesse Boulerice receives the longest single season suspension in NHL history as he gets 25 games for hitting Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler across the face with his stick.

2009 – Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook scores in overtime as the team matches the largest comeback in NHL history. Trailing 5-0 in the first period, the Hawks win 6-5 in OT.
