1911 – Cy Young makes his final MLB appearance. It’s the 906^th game of his career.

1926 – Babe Ruth becomes the first player in MLB history to hit three home runs in a World Series game as the Yankees beat the Cardinals 10-5 in Game #4.

1945 – Chicago tavern owner Billy Sianis buys a seat for his pet goat for Game #4 of the World Series at Wrigley Field. Sianis, and his goat, were ejected from the stadium, which caused Sianis to put a hex on the team – the legendary “Curse of the Billy Goat”.

1956 – The University of Oklahoma sets a modern college football record with their 32nd straight win, beating Kansas 66-0.

1959 – The Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series at the LA Memorial Coliseum in front of a record 92,706. 

1980 – “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler wins the world middleweight title, beating Alan Minter in a bout at Wembley Arena in London, England.

1985 – 49ers quarterback Joe Montana sets an NFL record by throwing 57 passes in a game without throwing an interception.

1993 – Michael Jordan announces his retirement after nine seasons in the NBA. He would return to the Bulls in March of 1995.

2000 – Hockey player Marty McSorley is found guilty of assault with a weapon for swinging his stick at Donald Brashear’s head in a game on February 21.

2010 – Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay throws just the second no-hitter in MLB post-season history, shutting down the Reds in Game #1 of the NLDS.

2017 – The Las Vegas Golden Knights make their NHL debut, with a 2-1 win over the Dallas Stars.

2018 – Khabib Nurmagomedov submits Conor McGregor in the 4th round of a UFC lightweight title fight in Las Vegas.
