1922 – A World Series game is broadcast on radio for the first time as the Giants faced the Yankees.

1930 – Notre Dame Stadium opens as the Fighting Irish defeat SMU 20-14 in the first game played at the stadium.

1938 – The Yankees complete a sweep of the Cubs to win the World Series.

1969 – The first league championship games are played in the MLB. NLCS: New York Mets against the Atlanta Braves. ALCS: Baltimore Orioles against the Minnesota Twins. 

1980 – Mike Schmidt hits his 48th home run of the season, breaking Eddie Matthews’ single-season record for homers hit by a third baseman. 

1987 – Replacement players take the field in the NFL for the first time as the regular players are on strike.
