THIS DAY IN REGION FOOTBALL HISTORY - 9/28

1962 – The Hammond High Wildcats remain undefeated with a 20-0 win over the school next door – Hammond Tech. It’s the second shutout of the season for the Cats and the first of four straight. Krueger’s club went 10-0 and allowed just 27 points against. The High would be crowned mythical champs for the second time in three years.

1963 – Tom Kurth and Griffith go to Gavit and get a 14-7 win over the Gladiators. Coach Kurth and company go on to a 8-0-2 record, matching the most wins ever by a Panther team in one season. It’s also the first and only time Griffith goes through a season without being defeated.

1973 – John Quinn and his Gavit Gladiators stay undefeated with a week five win over Bishop Noll 25-16. Quinn’s club went 10-0 in the regular season and qualified for the brand new state tournament and will forever go down as the first school in the Region to play a state tournament football game. Check back in November for the results of that contest.

1979 – The Hobart Brickies moved to 5-0 with a 42-12 win over Wallace at Brickie Bowl. Don Howell’s gridders went on to win their next six games and would advance to the state championship game for the first time. Check back in November for more on that game.

1990 – Paul Cesaretti gets the last win of his Lowell coaching tenure, a 9-6 defeat of the Calumet Warriors in the Land That Time Forgot. The next 161 wins for the Lowell football team are credited to Kirk Kennedy

2001 – The Chesterton Trojans get John Snyder his first win over Hobart, then a Duneland Conference opponent, by a score of 17-15.

2001 – The Laporte Slicers edge the Crown Point Bulldogs 10-7 in a slugfest at Bulldog Turf. For the Dogs, it’s the 21st straight game in which they had been outscored. The streak would hit a low point off 22 just a week later, before CP finally got a win in week nine. Check back in two weeks for more on that one.

2018 – First year head coach Bill Marshall earns his first win over mighty Merrillville, as the Vikings of Valpo down the purple Pirates by a 20-6 score.

2019 – The Vikings and Bill Marshall claim their second straight win over Crown Point, by a score of 31-14. It’s the sixth of 13 straight wins for the Green Machine during the ’19 season.

2019 – Brad Seiss and his Merrillville Pirates improve their record to 6-0 with a 21-0 shutout over the Laporte Slicers at the purple palace known as Demarree Stadium. The Bucs registered two shutouts on the season, both by scores of 21-0. The purple gang would be one of four NWI teams to make it to semi-state.

2019 – Chris Skinner and the Andrean 59ers evened their record up with a 49-6 beating of the Munster Mustangs. It’s the start of a seven game winning streak for boys on Broadway. The streak would continue until they ran into Eastbrook at semi-state.

2019 – Hessville and Woodmar collide for the second to last time at the Governor’s Mansion near Cline Ave and 169th Street. It’s all Morton in this one, as Sean Kinsey’s club wins 56-6.
