1930 – Brooklyn’s Al Lopez records the last recorded bounce home run in MLB history.

1976 – Seattle Seahawks play their first regular-season game in a 30-24 loss against St. Louis. 

1979 – Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox picks up career hit #3,000.

1984 – Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden sets an MLB rookie record by recording his 251st strikeout of the season.

1987 – Vince Coleman steals 100 bases for the third straight season.

1988 – The Cowboys beat the Cardinals in the first NFL regular season game played in Arizona.

1995 – After 24 years and 8,829 games, the Harlem Globetrotters winning streak ends, as they lose to a team led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a non-scripted game in Vienna, Austria.

2005 – NHL great Mark Messier announces his retirement.

2010 – Houston Texans running back Arian Foster becomes the first player in NFL history to rush for over 200 yards and three touchdowns in the opening week of the season as the Texans beat the Colts 34-24.

2014 – The Phoenix Mercury complete a three game sweep of the Chicago Sky to win the WNBA championship.

2015 – Kent State’s April Goss becomes the second female to score a point in a Division I football game, kicking a PAT as part of the team’s 45-13 win over Delaware State.

2015 – David Ortiz becomes the 27th member of the 500 home run club.
