1905 – White Sox pitcher Frank Smith throws a no-hitter against the Tigers.

1920 – Jack Dempsey knocks out Billy Miske in the third round to retain the world heavyweight title in the first prizefight that is broadcast on radio.

1945 – Athletics catcher Greek George is suspended for punching umpire Joe Rue.

1963 – A Cleveland Indians and Washington Senators game is reported to be the 100,000th in Major League Baseball history.

1977 – The Angels acquire Dave Kingman from the Padres for cash considerations. Nine days later the Yankees acquire him for cash. That means Kingman, who started the season with the Mets, would play in all four divisions in 1977.

1982 – The Pittsburgh Pirates retire Willie Stargell’s jersey #8.

1995 – Cal Ripken Jr. plays in his 2,131^st consecutive MLB game, passing Lou Gehrig for the most in baseball history.

1996 – Eddie Murray hits his 500^th career home run.

2008 – Serena Williams wins her third US Open championship, defeating Jelena Jankovic. 

2017 – FIFA orders a World Cup qualifying match between South Africa and Senegal be replayed after the referee is found guilty of match manipulation and banned for life. In the original meeting, South Africa won 2-1 thanks to a penalty kick awarded for a nonexistent handball.

2020 – Novak Djokovic, who was the #1 ranked Men’s tennis player in the world, is disqualified in the fourth round of the US Open.
