THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 9/1

1890 – The Brooklyn Bridegrooms win 3 MLB games in a single day. 

1931 – Lou Gehrig hits his third grand slam in a four game span. It is also his sixth straight game with a home run.

1964 – San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Masanori Murakami becomes the first Japanese born player to appear in an MLB game. Murakami throws a scoreless inning in a 4-1 loss to the Mets.

1967 – After 20 scoreless innings of play, Reds reliever Bob Lee walks San Francisco’s Dick Groat in the 21st inning to give the Giants a 1-0 win. The 20 scoreless innings ties an MLB record.

1973 – George Foreman KOs Jose “King” Roman in the first round in Foreman’s first title defense.

1975 – Mets pitcher Tom Seaver becomes the first pitcher in MLB history to record 200 strikeouts in eight straight seasons.

1978 – The Hobart Brickies fall 13-10 at Lafayette Jeff. Hobart went on to finish 9-1 in the regular season. Some attribute this loss as being the reason Hobart did not advance into the state tournament. Instead, Hammond High and Highland, who both finished 10-0, played each other in the sectional. The Brickies would win their final eight games of ’78 and their first 11 the following year.

1984 – Mississippi Valley State’s football team has a day. QB Willie Totten throws for D1 I-AA record 536 passing yards at 9 TDs. Jerry Rice has 17 catches for 294 yards and 5 TDs, which were also both records.

1987 – At 15 years old, American tennis player Michael Chang becomes the youngest player ever to win a match at the US Open, defeating Paul McNamee in four sets.

1989 – The Hobart Brickies, fresh off a week one loss to Gary Lew Wallace, go to Valpo where they defeat Mark Hoffman’s Vikings 21-10. It’s the first of 26 consecutive wins, spanning two seasons.

1996 – The Baltimore Ravens play in the franchise’s first regular season game, defeating the Raiders 17-14.

1996 – The Carolina Panthers beat the Falcons, 29-6, in their first regular season game. 

1999 – Mario Lemieux is approved as the new owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the franchise he once played for.

2006 – Roger Goodell begins his tenure as NFL Commissioner.

2006 – The #4 Griffith Panthers and #5 Lowell Red Devils continue their rivalry with a Week Three showdown at the Boneyard, and a crowd of more than 5,000 turned out to witness it. In the end Russ Radtke’s Panthers demolished the Red Devils 35-0.

2007 – In front of 109,128 fans at “The Big House” in Ann Arbor, Appalachian State shocks the fifth ranked Michigan Wolverines with a 34-32 upset win.

2007 – Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Bucholz throws a no-hitter in just his second MLB appearance.

2019 – Justin Verlander throws the third no-hitter of his career.

2021 – Cristiano Ronaldo sets a world record for international goals scored by a male, slotting his 110th and 111th for Portugal

2017 – Leroy Marsh and Munster get their first win of the season, a 35-13 defeat of the EC Central at the Marshlands. The victory is the last of Leroy’s career at his home field (the Marshlands).
