1931 – Lou Gehrig plays in his 1,000^th consecutive game.

1964 – South Africa is banned from the Olympic Games due to apartheid policies.

1965 – Hank Aaron hits a home run, but it is disallowed due to the fact that he was out of the batter’s box.

1965 – Brooks Robinson ties an MLB record by hitting into his third career triple play.

1973 – Hank Aaron sets an MLB record by hitting his 1,378^th career extra base hit, passing Stan Musial for the most all-time.

1977 – Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, Don Sutton, throws a National League record tying 5th career one-hitter. 

1982 – The longest game ever played at Wrigley Field comes to an end with the Dodgers beating the Cubs 2-1 in 22 innings. The game began on August 17.

1982 – Pete Rose sets an MLB record with his 13,941st plate appearance. 

1987 – Legendary NFL running back Earl Campbell announces his retirement.

2004 – The US women’s 4×200 freestyle relay team break the world record time, which was set back in 1987.

2016 – Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt wins the gold in the 200 meter dash for the third straight Olympics.

2021- Shohei Ohtani becomes fastest player in Los Angeles Angels history to hit 40 homeruns in a season. Alongside that, he pitched 8 innings in a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.
