1903 – French cyclist Maurice Garin wins the first ever Tour de France.
1909 – Cleveland shortstop Neal Ball completes the first unassisted triple play in modern MLB history.
1910 – Cy Young picks up career victory #500. He’s the only pitcher in MLB history to reach that milestone.
1922 – American swimmer Johnny Weissmuller becomes the first swimmer ever to break the one minute barrier in the 100 meter freestyle, finishing in 58.6 seconds.
1936 – Future Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller makes his MLB debut, coming out of the bullpen.
1980 – The Summer Olympics open in Moscow, Russia. 66 nations, including the United States boycott the games due to the Soviet-Afghan war.
1989 – NFL owners approve the formation of the World League of American Football. The league would run from 1991-2007.
1991 – Cal Ripken Jr. appears in his 1,500th consecutive game.
1996 – The Summer Olympics open in Atlanta, Georgia.
