1897 – The Chicago Colts, who would eventually become the Cubs, set an MLB record for most runs scored in a single game by a team as they beat the Louisville Cardinals 36-7.

1941 – Joe DiMaggio extends his hitting streak to 41 games, breaking the record set by George Sisler in 1922.

1958 – Brazil defeats Sweden 5-2 in the World Cup Final. The win makes Brazil the first team to win the World Cup outside its own continent. 17 year old star Pele scores twice in the win.

1961 – Willie Mays becomes the fourth player in MLB history to have two games where he hit three or more home runs.

1969 – “BIlly Williams Day” is held at Wrigley Field as the Cubs outfielder passes Stan Musial National League record by playing in his 896th consecutive game.

1984 – Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser begins a streak of making every scheduled start from this day until 1990.

1984 – Pete Rose plays in his 3,309th career game, passing Carl Yastrzemski for the most in MLB history.

1986 – Argentina defeats West Germany in the World Cup Final, playing in front of over 114,000 fans.

1986 – Sparky Anderson becomes the first manager in MLB history to win 600 games in both the American and National Leagues.

1990 – For the first time in baseball history a no-hitter is thrown in both the American League and National League on the same day. In the AL, Oakland’s Dave Stewart shuts down the Blue Jays and in the NL, Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela throws a no-no against the Cardinals.

1994 – The Milwaukee Bucks select Gary native Glenn Robinson with the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.
