1937 – Joe Louis knocks out James J. Braddock to win his first heavyweight boxing title.

1979 – The NHL expands to 21 teams as the Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets, all part of the WHA, join the league.

1981 – Tennis player John McEnroe famously yells at the chair judge in his match at Wimbledon, screaming “You cannot be serious!”.

1982 – Pete Rose collects career hit #3,772, passing Hank Aaron for the second most all-time.

1983 – The NHL institutes a five minute sudden death overtime period.

1987 – Legendary pitcher Tom Seaver retires from baseball.

1990 – The Atlanta Braves replace manager Russ Nixon with GM Bobby Cox. Cox would hold the job until 2010

1991 – Eric Lindros is selected first overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the NHL Draft. Lindros refused to play for the team, sitting out the 1991 season and would be traded to Philadelphia in 1992.

1994 – The Houston Rockets defeat the Knicks in game seven to win the NBA title.

2002 – St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile is found dead in his Chicago hotel room prior to a game against the Cubs.

2016 – The NHL approves an expansion team in Las Vegas that would start play in the 2017-18 season.

2017 – The Philadelphia 76ers draft Washington guard Markelle Fultz with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.
