1927 – Babe Ruth hits home runs #19 and #20 of his record setting 60 home run season.
1938 – Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Vander Meer throws the first of back to back no-hitters, shutting down the Boston Braves.
1955 – 83 spectators are killed in an accident at Le Mans auto race. The race would continue.
1961 – Roger Maris hits home runs #19 and #20 of his record setting 61 home run season.
1967 – The Cubs and Mets tie and MLB record by combining to hit 11 home runs in a game. The Cubs hit seven while the Mets belted four.
1974 – The NHL officially adds two new franchises – the Washington Capitals and the Kansas City Scouts. Kansas City moves to Denver a couple years later before eventually moving to New Jersey.
1988 – Rick Rhoden of the New York Yankees becomes the first pitcher to DH. He goes 0-1 with an RBI.
1990 – Nolan Ryan, then with the Rangers, records the sixth no-hitter of his career.
1995 – Mark McGwire ties an MLB record by homering in five straight games.
2012 – The Los Angeles Kings win the franchise’s first ever Stanley Cup, defeating the New Jersey Devils in six games.
2012 – Rafael Nadal wins the French Open for a record seventh time.
2017 – The Pittsburgh Penguins win their second straight Stanley Cup, beating the Nashville Predators in six games.
