1917 – Hank Gowdy is the first baseball player to enlist in World War I.

1923 – The New York Giants defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 22-8, scoring in every inning of the game.

1925 – Lou Gehrig pinch hits for Pee-Wee Wanninge, starting a streak of 2,130 consecutive games.

1937 – White Sox pitcher Bill Dietrich throws a no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns.

1939 – Lou Nova defeats Max Baer via TKO in the 11th round in the first ever televised boxing match.

1939 – The first night game in MLB history takes place at Shribe Park in Philadelphia with the Pirates beating the Phillies 5-2.

1946 – “Assault” becomes the seventh horse to win the Triple Crown.

1975 – Nolan Ryan, then with the California Angels, throws his fourth career no-hitter, shutting down the Orioles. This ties Sandy Koufax for most in MLB history.
