1894 – Bobby Lowe of the Boston Beaneaters becomes the first player in MLB history to hit four home runs in one game.
1911 – Ray Harroun wins the first Indianapolis 500. His average speed was 74.59 miles per hour.
1922 – In between games of a doubleheader, the Cubs trade Max Flack to St. Louis for Cliff Heathcote. Both players appeared in games for both teams that day.
1927 – “The Big Train” Walter Johnson records the 113th, and final, shutout of his career.
1935 – Babe Ruth plays in his final career game, going hitless for the Braves against the Phillies.
1948 – Minor league pitcher, and future Dodgers manager, Tommy Lasorda strikes out 25 hitters in a 15 inning game.
1967 – Yankees pitching great Whitey Ford announces his retirement.
1971 – Willie Mays hits career home run #638 and also scores the 1,950th run of his career, setting an NL record.
1977 – Cleveland Indians pitcher Dennis Eckersley throws a no-hitter against the California Angels.
1985 – The Edmonton Oilers win their second straight Stanley Cup, beating the Flyers in game five of their series.
1986 – Barry Bonds makes his MLB debut, suiting up for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
1992 – Minnesota Twins pitcher Bert Blyleven becomes the second pitcher in MLB history to record major league wins as both a teenager and 40 year old.
2011 – Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel resigns following an NCAA player-benefits violation.
2015 – The Blackhawks defeat the Anaheim Ducks in game seven to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.
