1874 – McGill University and Harvard played a football game in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is the first college football game to charge admission.

1904 – The Olympics open in St. Louis. It is the first time the games are held in the USA.

1913 – Washington Senators pitcher Walter Johnson’s record scoreless streak ends at 56 innings.

1920 – Walter Johnson wins his 300th career game.

1967 – Yankees slugger Mickey Mantle hits his 500th career home run.

1972 – In his first game as a member of the New York Mets, Willie Mays hits a home run to help defeat his old team, the San Francisco Giants, 5-4.

1977 – The Boston Bruins win their second straight Stanley Cup, completing a sweep of the Montreal Canadiens.

1981 – The Boston Celtics win the NBA title, defeating the Rockets in a six game series.

1986 – Reggie Jackson hits career home run #537, passing Mickey Mantle for sixth most all-time.

1988 – Cardinals utilityman Jose Oquendo becomes the first non-pitcher to get a pitching decision since 1968, as he gets the loss in a 7-5 Braves win over St. Louis in 19 innings.

1989 – Twins outfielder Kirby Puckett becomes the first player since 1948 to hit doubles in six consecutive at bats.

2018 – The Supreme Court clears the way for states to legalize sports betting, ending the ban despite opposition from major sports leagues.
