1909 – Honus Wagner steals his way around the bases in the first inning of a game against the Cubs.

1917 – Fred Toney of the Reds and “Hippo” Vaughn of the Cubs each pitch a no-hitter in their nine inning showdown, but the Reds pick up two hits in the 10th to get a 1-0 win.

1920 – The first game of the National Negro Baseball League is played in Indianapolis.

1923  – Washington Senators pitcher Walter Johnson throws his 100th career shutout.

1939 – Lou Gehrig’s consecutive game streak comes to an end at 2,130.

1954 – St. Louis Cardinals great Stan Musial hits a combined five homers in a double-header.

1970 – Diane Crump becomes the first female jockey to ride in the Kentucky Derby. Her horse, Fathom, finishes 15th out of a 17 horse field.

1978 – The Houston Oilers draft Texas running back Earl Campbell with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.

1988 – Reds manager Pete Rose is suspended 30 games for pushing an umpire.

1999 – Broncos quarterback John Elway announces his retirement from the NFL.

2001 – James Hylton bowls the fifth perfect 900 series in the history of bowling.

2002 – Getting revenge against his old team, Mariners outfielder Mike Cameron hits four home runs against the White Sox. He nearly hits a record setting fifth, but it is caught on the warning track. Also in the game, Cameron and Brett Boone become the first teammates in MLB history to each hit two home runs in the same inning.

2010 – LeBron James becomes the 10th player in NBA history to win consecutive MVP awards.

2015 – Floyd Mayweather Jr. beats Manny Pacquaio on points in a 12 round welterweight unification match.
