1891 – Legendary pitcher Cy Young gets his first career win as his Cleveland Spiders defeat the Cincinnati Redlegs 12-3.

1901 – White Sox outfielder Herm McFarland hits the first grand slam in American League history. Also in the game, the Detroit Tigers committed 12 errors.

1920 – Babe Ruth hits his first home run as a member of the New York Yankees. It is also his 50th career home run.

1925 – Future Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx makes his MLB debut, picking up a pinch hit single in a 9-4 Philadelphia loss to Washington.

1940 – The Summer Olympics, which were to be held in Helsinki, are canceled by the Finnish Olympic Committee due to World War II.

1951 – Mickey Mantle hits his first career home run in an 8-3 Yankees win over the White Sox. Also in the game, Minnie Minoso homers in his White Sox debut.

1984 – The New England Patriots draft Nebraska wide receiver Irving Fryar with the #1 overall draft pick.

1988 – Michael Jordan becomes the first player in NBA history to score 50 plus points in consecutive playoff games by scoring 55  in a Bulls win over the Cavs in Game #2 of their series.

1991 – Oakland A’s outfielder Rickey Henderson sets an MLB record by stealing his 939th career base, passing Lou Brock for most all time.

1991 – Nolan Ryan, then with the Rangers, throws his seventh career no-hitter, shutting down the Toronto Blue Jays. At 44 years old, Ryan is the oldest player in MLB history to throw a no-hitter.

1992 – One year after setting the record for most stolen bases in a career, Rickey Henderson adds another milestone by stealing his 1,000th career base.

1995 – The Montreal Canadiens fail to make the NHL playoffs for the first time in 25 years.

2004 – Giants outfielder Barry Bonds is intentionally walked four times in one game against the Marlins. It is the most times a hitter has been intentionally walked in a nine inning game.
