1942 – Stanford beats Dartmouth 53-38 to win the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

1950 – CCNY beats Bradley 71-68 to win the NCAA men’s hoops tournament. With the win, CCNY becomes the only team to win the NIT and NCAA tournament in the same year as CCNY beat Bradley to win the NIT on March 18.

1963 – The AFL’s New York Titans change their name to the New York Jets.

1971 – Gail Goodrich of the Lakers sets an NBA playoff record by shooting the most free throws without a miss, hitting all 17 of his shots at the charity stripe.

1972 – Wilt Chamberlain plays in his final pro basketball game.

1977 – Marquette beats North Carolina to win the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

1982 – Louisiana Tech defeats Cheyney State 76-62 to win the first ever women’s basketball national championship.

1990 – Michael Jordan scores 69 points as the Bulls beat the Cavaliers in overtime and clinch a playoff spot.

1990 – President George H,W, Bush posthumously awards Jesse Owens the Congressional Gold Medal.

1992 – Christian Laettner hits a 15 foot jumper as time expires to give Duke a 104-103 win over Kentucky, sending the Blue Devils to the Final Four.

1993 – Winnipeg’s Teemu Selanne becomes the eighth player, and first rookie, in NHL history to score 70 goals in a season.
